FACIAL ASYMMETRY:

Facial symmetry is always appreciated and welcomes one of the most beautiful faces in the world. We commonly believe the face to be symmetrical, but in reality, typical symmetry is a myth. A noticeable asymmetrical face is considered as unattractive or unpleasant and will require cosmetic surgical correction.

Asymmetry can be due to, irregular jaw growth or irregularities in teeth alignment. Corrective orthodontic and cosmetic jaw surgery techniques give a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing face with restoration of function. Commonly, face asymmetry is because the lower jaw is shorter on one side in comparison to the otherside.

Despite of the normal growth of jaws, the soft tissue discrepancies such as masseter hypertrophy (enlargement of masseter – a muscle that facilitates chewing) and muscle deficit on one side of the face (as seen in some syndromes like Parry-Romberg syndrome) can also result in facial asymmetry surgical reduction of the masseter muscle is performed to make the face more symmetrical and enhance the aesthetics of the face. Fat grafting is also done in selected cases to correct soft tissue deficiency.
